Dr. White is an Associate Professor of Software Engineering, and Chair of the Software Engineering Program, at the University of Houston - Clear Lake. Her research interests include domain specification languages, architecture design languages, and software architecture. She conducts research in the areas of architecture description languages and software reuse and reengineering.
Dr. White joined the UHCL Software engineering faculty in August of 1995. She was a visiting professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana from July 1994 - July 1995. Dr. White received the Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1994 from the Center for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Lafayette, Louisiana, where she conducted product design research in conjunction with the Apparel - Computer Integrated Manufacturing (A-CIM) center. Previous to the Ph.D., Dr. White received the MS degree in Computer Science in 1987 from the Center for Advanced Computer Studies after which she served for three years as Instructor in the Computer Science Department at University of Louisiana, Lafayette.
Dr. White's Research Interest center around Domain Specification, particularly the the definition and development of Domain Specific Languages that can be used to specify Software Architecture Domains. The research begin with her Dissertation and has continued. She was awarded funding from the Institute for Space Systems Operations for a UH-NASA JSC Aerospace Post Doctoral Fellowship project titled "Domain specific architectural design language generation" to continue this research at UHCL. This award provided funding for a Post Doctoral Fellow to work with Dr. White and the Johnson Space Center for a number of years. She also serves as a regular grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation.
Dr. White is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Software Engineering (ISE). She is the Vice President of Education Activities of ISE, and chair of the WISE (Women in Software Engineering) subcommittee of ISE, and as Vice President of Education Activities she is the chair of the Certificate Selection and Advisory Committee which implements, administers the ISE's new Certificate in Software Engineering program. Dr. White has also been very active in the Faculty Senate having served 4 consecutive years as a member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate at UHCL. She also served as the Chair of the University wide Library Research and Computing Committee and as a member of the University Council and Academic Council for 4 consecutive years.
As chair of the of the Software Engineering Program at UHCL, Dr. White serves as the director of the planning and implementation of UHCL's web-based MS degree in Software Engineering. This option has been offered to students since 2005 and it has proven to be a successful addition to UHCL's varied programs.
